Cory Chorpenning is a nominee for induction into the GutterAlley Hall of Fame during the Fall 2013 season. Before the Fall 2006 season, many of the top records in the league were owned by just a small handful of individuals...and then Cory Chorpenning made his debut as a substitute bowler. Over the course of seven seasons, Chorpenning established himself as one of the highest rolling, most dominant anchors in GutterAlley's history, culminating in his first championship in the Fall 2007 session one season after winning the Rookie of the Season award. He won his second title in the Fall 2012 session. Currently the 6th best bowler in GutterAlley history, Chorpenning has racked up an impressive career on the lanes. Three times he has been named the Most Valuable Bowler along with three #1 Power Ranked Bowler runs. Twice he's been named the Carl Goetz Defensive Bowler of the season and was the People's Choice MVB in Fall 2008 season. His 190 lifetime average is higher than every single member of the Hall of Fame. Cory's name dominates the Top 25 lists, both as an individual and as a member on some of the most impressive teams ever fielded. He has the 2nd highest lifetime average, rolled the 3rd highest game (289), owns the 2nd best personal start to a season (he averaged 229), ranks 4th with the most 200+ games in a single season, 7th most 200+ games over his career, 7th in the most 600+ series, and a litany of other impressive stats. As a member of various teams, he has been instrumental in the biggest outputs of all time. He rolled on the 4-man teams that put up the three highest team series in league history as well as the five highest team games of all time – including the seemingly untouchable 921 that has stood since 2008. While on the lanes, Cory is a tenacious competitor with high personal standards. Off the lanes, he has generously given up his own time – as well as bowling balls and equipment – to help others improve their own game. His feature student, Kendall Kukowski, went from team handicapper to a formidable roller in the league proving Cory to be a great coach as well.Here are a few comments about Cory from those that nominated him:
Cory's quiet nature sometimes means he tends to slip out of the limelight, and it goes unnoticed that he is one of the best players he league has seen – even having been essential to one of the most powerful teams the league has ever seen. But he always has a smile, and is willing to lend a hand to help out others -- for instance recently giving a bowling ball to someone he barely knows because he saw the potential in that person. The league hasn't given Cory the recognition he deserves since a couple of runner-up end-of-season awards in 2008, it's time to rectify that.I've bowled both with and against Cory, mostly against. As much as I hate to admit it, I feared rolling his team each and every time we faced off. No matter how anyone else on my team or his team was performing, my eyes were glued to Cory's score. He's a proven warrior and a hell of a guy. As one of the best bowlers in league history, he deserves to be in the Hall. Quiet, shy and reserved, Cory Chorpening usually doesn't have much to say. Which is fine because his bowling does most of the talking. In seven seasons, Cory has turned in quite the list of accomplishments. Not only has he won 2 titles, but he owns the record for total pins in a single season -- over Hall of Famers like Ken Wilson, David Codding, and Carl Goetz. It's usually all smiles for Cory, who is one of the few bowlers you root for – and attempt to out-bowl – at the same time. Just don't ask to get in a scrum with him, you might wind up in a hospital.A good teammate is someone willing to get outside of personal thoughts and emotions, a friend who tries to understand, appreciate, and encourage other members of the team. That would be Cory in a nutshell. Elevating not only my game but Kendall's as well, his influence took our meager talents to the next level. More so Kendall's than mine, but still my game was definitely for the better having bowled with him. I miss those "Sh!t" days. They were fun. Cory was a huge part of that fun. Whether you bowl with him or against him, he is just a great guy to be around. He epitomizes what the VML Bowling League is about. Good competitive fun amongst friends.
