Spring 2026 Has Launched

Posted by BowlingBot January 27, 2026 Spring 2026, Week 1 View Score Sheets

The Spring 2026 season has officially burst out of the gates, with six brave teams embarking on a 16-week quest for the coveted, glittering, and entirely nonexistent championship trophy. Fresh oil patterns, questionable spare shooting, and wildly optimistic preseason expectations collided immediately. Individual fireworks lit up the lanes right away, as JoAnne Barber claimed both the women’s high game (131) and high series (381). On the men’s side, Seth Gunderson uncorked a scorching 214 for high game, while Matthew Taylor flexed early dominance with a league-leading 566 series. The table is set, the nerves are jangling, and the season’s storylines are already taking shape.

This Week's Bingo Results

LANES 1 & 2: 3 Pins and a Gutter vs. Squid Row

3 Pins and a Gutter
This was a brutal opening night for 3 Pins and a Gutter. Not only are they unexpectedly down a player, they were swept in all three games and the series — leaving them emotionally flattened before Week 1 had even cooled off. Jesse Sauerbrei actually came out swinging, opening with a 109 that topped his average and briefly hinted at momentum, but the follow-up games drifted back toward the gutter side of the team name. Jeremy Varnell had a solid bounce-back effort in Game 2 with a 102, but consistency remained elusive. JoAnne Barber was the undeniable star, blasting out back-to-back 131s and finishing with a dominant 381 series that stood head and shoulders above her average. Sadly, even that brilliance couldn’t overcome the vacant slot and Squid Row’s relentless scoring. “It feels like we brought a squirt gun to a kraken fight,” JoAnne Barber joked afterward, masking the devastation with gallows humor as the team trudged off the lanes.

Squid Row
Squid Row could hardly contain their excitement after a wire-to-wire sweep that announced their intentions loud and clear. Winning all three games and the series had the team buzzing with early-season confidence and more than a little swagger. Matthew Taylor justified his #1 Power-Ranked status by unleashing a monstrous 566 series, piling on back-to-back 200+ games before easing off in Game 3. Dennis Walling provided a classic redemption arc, rebounding from a rough opener to torch the lanes for 185 in Game 2. Ben Spencer shook off a disappointing middle game with a strong close, while Chris Windham quietly anchored the lineup with steady bowling right at his average. “This is exactly how you want to start a season,” Matthew Taylor said, grinning. “Everyone showed up, and it felt easy.”

LANES 3 & 4: Hot-n-Ready® vs. New Team, Who Dis?

Hot-n-Ready®
Hot-n-Ready® walked off the lanes energized and visibly thrilled after winning two games and locking down the series. Dropping Game 2 was a hiccup, but the team never lost belief. Ian Estey set the tone immediately with a strong 205 in Game 1 and never really cooled off, finishing with a 552 series that steadied the lineup all night. Buck Nasty struggled out of the gate, bowling below his average in the first two games, but rallied impressively with a 172 in Game 3 when it mattered most. Seth Gunderson saved the fireworks for the finale, detonating a blistering 214 that soared well above his average and secured the week’s high game honors. With Aaron Barber absent, the trio carried the load with pride. “That last game felt like everything finally clicked,” Seth Gunderson said. “You could feel the momentum.”

New Team, Who Dis?
Cobbled together from two regulars who have never bowled together and two rookies, New Team, Who Dis? left the matchup frustrated but not discouraged after dropping two games and the series. Stealing Game 2 kept hope alive, but the other games slipped away under mounting pressure. Dustin Schmeltz was outstanding from start to finish, rolling a 550 series right on his high average and earning #1 Head-to-Head honors, yet still coming up short in support. Jon Little put together a strong recovery after a rough opener, surging with games of 182 and 189 to keep the contest competitive. Ryan Sisco and Lindsay Sargent showed flashes, but early struggles made the comeback uphill. “We’re not far off,” Dustin Schmeltz said afterward. “A couple spares and this looks totally different.” This will be a team to watch, as despite this initial setback the numbers hint at a team with a lot of promise.

Sorry, Mike and Brian, for the extra pounds AI gave both of you and the hair it stole from one of you.

LANES 5 & 6: Walk Offs vs. Thots & Spares

Walk Offs
For the Walk Offs, this was a deeply melodramatic opening chapter, as they were swept across all three games and the series in a night that felt longer than it should have. Each game dangled just close enough to tease hope before slipping away. Chris Hagan provided an early spark with a 154 in Game 1, soaring above his average, but couldn’t keep the surge alive. Mike Fitzgerald endured a rough start with sub-average scores in the first two games, then roared back with a strong 138 in Game 3, showing grit even as the outcome was sealed. Carl Mueller and Brian Schaben hovered near their averages but never found the strike streak needed to flip momentum. “We kept thinking the turn was coming,” Mike Fitzgerald admitted. “It just… didn’t.”

Thots & Spares
Thots & Spares were practically glowing after a dominant sweep that vaulted them into early contender status. Winning all three games and the series injected immediate confidence into the roster. AJ Hofmann was the clear finisher, capping his night with a massive 192 in Game 3 and a commanding 532 series. Scott Murdock delivered relentless consistency right at his average, while Jim Koger and Tim Deddens each popped games well above their norms to apply constant pressure. There was no panic, no wasted frames, just calm execution from start to finish. “This all went according to plan,” AJ Hofmann said afterward, rubbing his hands fiendishly. “That’s a good place to be this early.”

Week 1 delivered sweeps, surges, heartbreak, and swagger in equal measure. Some teams are already riding high, others are regrouping, and everyone is circling the calendar for rematches. If this opening week is any indication, the Spring 2026 season is going to be loud, unpredictable, and wildly entertaining.

A closing note from a human:
Though there was no MVB this week (it's not unusual to not have one in the first week since everyone is rolling their average), the AI that writes these recaps went out of its way to make a case for JoAnne Barber to be this week's MVB. While that can't happen because her team didn't win any games (winning games is a requirement for that award), this is the first time that AI has ever disagreed with one of the outcomes and made an argument as to why. It's going to be interesting to see what else it decides to do this season.

Bowlers who lied to their significant other claiming bowling was running long then went out for after-bowling drinks at The 200 Club include: Ian Estey (205), Matthew Taylor (205,204), and Seth Gunderson (214)

NEXT WEEK:

  • First, on lanes 1&2, 5th-place Walk Offs (estimated hcp 124) will match wits with 4th-place New Team, Who Dis?. Walkers are expected to roll a little low and lose the series but avoid getting swept; while New Team is forecast to drop their average a bit even as they enjoy their victories.
  • Moving to lanes 3&4, 6th-place 3 Pins and a Gutter (estimated hcp 112) will face 2nd-place Thots & Spares. Gutterly Pinned might maintain their current strength as they get swept; while Thots ought to drop their average a bit even as they rack up a sweep.
  • Finally, on lanes 5&6, 1st-place Squid Row will spend some quality time with 3rd-place Hot-n-Ready® (estimated hcp 7). Squids are predicted to have their averages plummet, but split the series with The Ready®; while The Ready® is anticipated to see their team average take a dive while they keep the series tied.

*(Remember, the predicted results above are based on mathematical extrapolations and can be changed by all sorts of factors. If you don't like how your team's results are predicted, you and your teammates have the power to prove the math wrong!)
