The 11th Frame: Week 4, Spring 2013

Posted by Ken February 17, 2013 Spring 2013

The fourth installment of "The 11th Frame" features some interesting nuggets from our Top 25s across current (and not so-current) league rollers. As mentioned already in this week's write-upCory Chorpenning was both the #1 Power Ranked Bowler and MVB in his best individual performance since returning to the league after a 3-year absence. Wondering what else happened that you probably didn't know about? Check this out:INDIVIDUALS:

Freda's a hoarder!

Freda Schroeder
At the end of each season, we present monetary awards to those individuals that roll the highest series and game (scratch as well as handicap) for each gender. To make it fair, the rule has always been to limit it to just one per bowler...otherwise Freda Schroeder would take 'em all! She currently leads in every female category: Women's High Series Scratch (537), Women's High Game Scratch (211), Women's High Series Handicap (642), and Women's High Game Handicap (246).
Bobby aims to spank AB soon

Bob Brunker
More often than not, when Angela Bradford is bowling our very own Good Sportsmanship award's namesake Bob Brunker is on her team. She may want to rethink this as Bob has moved within one game of tying AB's place on the Top 25 Bowlers with the Most 200+ Games. Fourteen people on our current season's roster are also on this list at the moment.
DeVoe-station via Mark in the ToC

Mark DeVoe
With the Tournament of Champions officially underway this season, Mark DeVoe came out firing with his best series this season (shooting over his average every single game) to sweep the first week in Division 4. Ken, Cory, and Freda also swept their respective divisions. This got us to thinking, who has swept their division the most weeks? Thirteen current bowlers made the list. Keep it up, DeVoe. We want to see you make this list this season!
Murdock rebounds big

Scott Murdock
Those of us that have known Scott "Scooter" Murdock over the years knows that he likes to do things big. Take the bowling site, for example. It could simply just show league standings and rosters...but, oh no. Scoot wanted to go big. His latest "going big" endeavor? His upswing on Tuesday night. Making it onto one of our latest lists – Top 25 Bowlers Truly Feelin' It – Murdock improved game after game to log the 20th best performance in league history. Go big or go home, son.

TEAMS:

Close shaves, but not as close as this
Every season, we seem to report on some very close games won or lost in the 10th frame – many of which are settled by just a handful of pins. So far this season we've had two games won by two or three pins. Last week, Three Strikes and You're Out bested Split It & Hit It by two pins in Game #1. This week, Split It once again came up just a little short in a 3-pin loss to Dragon Balls in Game #2. But what about the games that are lost by a single pin? So far we haven't had any of those this season...but these teams have throughout our history.
Higher and higher
We're only a month into the season and the extremely high collective output of Snakes on a Lane continues to make its way into the various all-time lists for teams. After setting the record for the highest output by a 4-person team in the very first week, the guys this week broke their own record and crossed the 2,500 barrier for the first time ever – shooting a 2,551. Broken down, that's each bowler averaging a 637 series. Can they break the 921 single game record shot back in the Fall '08 season? Cory Chorpenning doesn't care as he was a member of that 921 team and therefore owns the top five spots on that list already.

ODDITIES & STRAIGHT UP NUMBERS:

We're on a record pace for 200+ games this season
Typically, every season, we have 8-10 teams doing battle against one another week after week. Never before have we, as a league, had a collective goal. We'd like to see that change this season. Why? As a group, we're on pace to shatter the record for the season with the most 200+ games thrown. In the Spring '07 session, we threw 183 games in the two-hundreds. In just four weeks we've already thrown 62. At this rate, we could blow that away. Keep rollin' high, gang!
