Hall of Famer: AJ Hofmann

Hall of Famer: AJ Hofmann

AJ Hofmann was the fourteenth bowler inducted into the GutterAlley Hall of Fame, voted in during the Fall 2022 season. His fellow inductees were Aaron Barber and Dennis Walling.

AJ first joined the GutterAlley Bowling League in the Fall 2009 season, and as of the time of this writing has participated in over 30 seasons. He began life as a low-130s bowler and now reliably carries averages in the mid-170s. His all-time high scratch game is 279 (tied for 7th best) and his best scratch series is 672. He has been Most Valuable Bowler a staggering 23 times -- tied for the most in league history. He has been #1 Power Ranked Bowler the same number of times, and has won one championship.

While AJ has recruited his own fair share of bowlers, he has been vital to the league's success in that in 2015 he stepped up to manage all the financial aspects of the league -- handing money collections, keeping track of payments and expenses, and managing the prize payouts. Scoot, who was burning out at the time, probably would have given up the league without that help.

When we were still at AMF, the bowling alley would deposit 100% of our bowling payments into their own account, then the corporate office would mail us a check at the end of each season. We would then have to both co-sign the check and visit a bank together (usually with 24 hours advance notice to the bank needed) to get the check cashed in a specific list of denominations. There was one season the corporate office mistakenly shipped our prize money to a bowling alley in Texas. This mistake was not realized until the day before we were due to hand out prize money, and we had bowlers who were set to move away from Kansas City during the break. Not many people know this, but rather than let everyone in the league down at the awards ceremony and need to make arrangements to get money to the people who were leaving, AJ personally covered the entire prize fund that season to make sure everybody got their money on time -- to be reimbursed once we finally received the check. This was a tremendous act of dedication.

Since moving to St. John's, where the league is charged flat weekly rent, AJ quickly converted our bookkeeping to work with this model and devised the system of pre-pay discounts to ensure we would always have the funds to pay the rent each week.

It is with great pleasure that the GutterAlley Hall of Fame opens its doors to AJ Hofmann.
