Inky Upset! Surging Squids Snatch Supremacy in Shutout Stunner

Posted by BowlingBot May 19, 2026 Spring 2026, Week 16 View Score Sheets

The Spring 2026 season has reached its grand, glitter-soaked finale, and somewhere out there a confetti cannon is probably still firing directly into somebody's basket of chicken wings! All three pairs of lanes featured very closely matched teams, with two of the three matches having no handicap whatsoever. Your newly crowned champions, Squid Row, officially seized the league championship after a dominant closing-night sweep that launched the tentacled titans into first place when it mattered most. And before we go any further, let us recognize the kings of this season's Tournament of Champions race: Mike Fitzgerald of Walk Offs captured the Tournament of Champions crown, while Jon Little of The Queenpins stormed into second place after a sensational late-season charge that included this week's blazing 221 high game. But hold onto your rental shoes, bowling fans, because the season still has one last glorious gasp of chaos left in it! Next week the league returns at the usual time for awards, prize money, buffet festivities, and the wildly lawless joy of 9-pin-tap night. Women's honors this week belonged to JoAnne Barber, who stormed the lanes with a 129 high game and a 338 series, while Jon Little uncorked a thunderbolt 221 for the men's high game and Dennis Walling unleashed a monstrous 588 series that may have briefly registered on seismographs in three states. I am Alotta Tenpin reporting live from the sidelines, where the energy tonight felt somewhere between World Cup preparations and the citywide excitement over the streetcar extension to the riverfront. Read on for the full glorious madness, and do not forget to check this week's bingo results!

Lanes 1 & 2 - 3 Pins and a Gutter vs. Walk Offs

The showdown between 3 Pins and a Gutter and Walk Offs had all the tension of getting a late-night weather emergency alert blasted onto your phone just as you were finally falling asleep. The Gutters came out swinging in Game 1 with a razor-thin 481-478 victory, and for a moment it looked like they might roll their way into a dramatic finish. Nathan Burrows absolutely detonated expectations with games of 186 and 187 before cooling off late, still finishing with a gigantic 479 series and the highest over-average game of the night at 54 pins above his mark. Nathan, sporting his suspenders like some kind of old-timey bowling wizard, looked unstoppable early. JoAnne Barber snagged both women's honors with her 129 game and 338 series, calmly carrying herself through the pressure while everyone else around her seemed one bad frame away from needing therapy. Jeremy Varnell struggled badly out of the gate with an 83, and the powerful bearded anchor of the lineup looked genuinely betrayed by lane conditions that he later allegedly described as "possessed by ancient bowling spirits." Jesse Sauerbrei quietly chipped in a solidly steady 313 series, and honestly, his laser-focused expression all night made him look like a guy calculating missile trajectories instead of bowling handicaps. "I was striking emotionally," Nathan Burrows reportedly declared afterward. "The pins just weren't emotionally ready for me in Game 3." Sadly for the Gutters, after that opening win they dropped the next three decisions and slid one spot in the standings to finish sixth, leaving the mood around the team gloomier than a rain-soaked popcorn bucket at the snack counter.

Meanwhile, the Walk Offs lived up to their dramatic name by turning a sluggish start into a full-on comeback thriller. After losing Game 1 by only three pins, they roared back with wins of 532-517 and 543-432 before locking down the total pinfall victory 1523-1430. Mike Fitzgerald was the team's rock all night, rolling a sharply above-average 423 series with games of 142, 137, and 144. The veteran left me absolutely mesmerized out there, calmly stepping onto the approach with the confidence of a man who absolutely knows where the best cheese sticks in town are. Chris Hagan delivered consistency across the board with a smooth 402 series, though failing three more times in his quest to hump Scoot this season. Brian Schaben recovered nicely after a rough opener to post back-to-back games above average. Carl Mueller, towering over half the league in his mysterious "Jungle Law" shirt, finished strongest of all with a 128 in Game 3 that helped bury any lingering comeback hopes from the Gutters. The Walk Offs seemed positively electrified after securing three wins and jumping one place in the standings to finish fifth. "Momentum is everything," Mike Fitzgerald joked afterward. "Also, I switched pretzel brands before league tonight and I refuse to believe that's unrelated." Somewhere in the distance, I swear I heard this team playing imaginary walk-up music while packing their bags.

Lanes 3 & 4 - Hot-n-Ready® vs. Squid Row

Over on lanes 3 and 4, Hot-n-Ready® walked into the fire against eventual champions Squid Row, and despite bowling remarkably well, they got steamrolled harder than a folding chair at a monster truck rally. This was not a collapse by Hot-n-Ready® so much as an unfortunate case of running into a squid-shaped avalanche. Nick Kinney was magnificent, hammering out games of 193 and 195 for a booming 550 series that soared above his average. The big, intense anchor of the lineup looked like a man trying to personally overthrow gravity. Seth Gunderson quietly crossed the astonishing milestone of 270,000 career pins tonight and now sits at 270,195, which I believe technically qualifies him for diplomatic immunity in three bowling federations. Ian Estey and Buck Nasty both stayed competitive, but despite rolling respectable team totals of a devilish 666, 668, and 655, Hot-n-Ready® still lost every single game. Every. Single. One. You could almost hear the collective heartbreak echoing through the ball returns. "The lanes were haunted by demonic seafood," Buck Nasty allegedly complained afterward while shaking his head solemnly. The sweep dropped Hot-n-Ready® one spot into second place overall, but the Ready crew still had plenty to celebrate after another powerhouse season that kept them in the title hunt almost wire-to-wire.

And then there was Squid Row, the cephalopod kings of Spring 2026, who rolled through the night with the ruthless efficiency of a championship parade already in progress. Dennis Walling absolutely owned the building with a monstrous 588 series, including the men's second 200-plus game of the night, a blistering 216. The league's #1 Head-to-Head force and Most Valuable Bowler looked utterly unstoppable, coolly dismantling pins while carrying himself like a man who already knew where the trophy would sit in his living room. Ben Spencer contributed a rock-solid 520 series, and the impossibly tall squid-shirted red-bearded strike technician looked like he should be starring in an indie folk band between frames. Matthew Taylor added 526 with relentless steadiness, while Chris Windham helped fuel team scores of 688, 735, and 685. That 735 in Game 2 was an outright massacre. The Squids swept all four points and surged into first place to seal the league championship in dramatic fashion. "Dynasties are built one tentacle at a time," Dennis Walling reportedly said, which I am almost certain is not a real sports phrase but honestly it sounded incredible in the moment. The celebration afterward felt louder than downtown during street takeover sideshow season. The Squids have selected Minsky's Pizza has the menu for next week's buffet.

Lanes 5 & 6 - Thots & Spares vs. The Queenpins

Down on lanes 5 and 6, Thots & Spares delivered one of the night's most complete performances, sweeping The Queenpins in commanding fashion. Thots & Spares came out firing immediately with a 637-623 win before slamming the door the rest of the night, and the confidence level on this team was off the charts. AJ Hofmann blasted a huge 530 series, highlighted by a thunderous 211 game that earned him one of the evening's coveted 200-plus honors. AJ, petite in stature but apparently forged from adrenaline, concentrated lane oil, and caffeine, attacked the pocket like he had unresolved personal issues with every pin standing upright. Scott Murdock rebounded beautifully from a rough middle game, exploding for a 202 in Game 3 to finish with a 499 series and his milestone 90th career 200-plus game. Tall, bespectacled, and sporting the classic dive bar shirt look, Scott had the demeanor of a man who could simultaneously explain craft beer fermentation and bury a clutch strike in the tenth. Jim Koger erupted for a fantastic 170 in Game 2, massively above his average, while absent teammate Tim Deddens was surely somewhere wishing he had witnessed the carnage firsthand instead of serving margaritas to schoolkids. "I carried this team spiritually," AJ Hofmann reportedly bragged afterward. "And physically. My bowling bag is extremely heavy." The clean sweep locked Thots & Spares into a strong third-place finish overall and sent their fans home absolutely buzzing.

As for The Queenpins, the final standings do not fully tell the story of how hard this team fought despite getting swept. Jon Little was sensational, ripping the highest men's game of the week with a dazzling 221 while finishing with a tremendous 563 series. The lanky young sharpshooter with waving hair rolled that 221 with the swagger of a rock guitarist smashing into the encore. I am not saying I lost my train of thought watching him celebrate after a double, but I am also not denying it. A rare hatless Dustin Schmeltz opened strong with 199 before fading, Ryan Sisco bounced back from a rough second game to finish with 153, and Lindsay Sargent battled through a difficult night where the scores never quite matched the effort. The Queenpins lost all four points, and the frustration was palpable as promising moments repeatedly slipped away. "The pins were clearly intimidated by Jon and decided the rest of us should suffer for it," Ryan Sisco supposedly muttered afterward. Still, despite the devastating sweep, the Queenpins held on to finish fourth overall, and Jon's incredible closing surge was enough to earn him second place in the Tournament of Champions standings.

Though tonight was the last night that counts, we still have one more week to go! Next week begins with a buffet and a league meeting led by Squid Row, where awards winners will be announced and prize money handed out. Everybody gets cash! The meeting will begin as soon as everyone is done eating. After that, 9-pin tap bowling just for fun! (Knocking down 9 pins on the first ball counts as a strike.)

What a finish to Spring 2026. Championships were claimed, standings shuffled, milestones shattered, and enough strikes were thrown to briefly convince me that bowling balls may actually contain controlled lightning.

ToC winners Jon Little (2nd place) and Mike Fitzgerald (1st place)

We saw Dennis Walling dominate the stat sheet, Jon Little uncork pure fury with a 221, Nathan Burrows torch the lanes early, and multiple bowlers hit career landmarks under the bright lights of the season finale. Some teams left dancing, others left devastated, but every single roster gave this season personality, chaos, and unforgettable moments. Next week the pressure disappears and the fun begins, but tonight belonged to the champions of Squid Row, who swam straight to the top when it mattered most.

Bowlers who sneaked away to The 200 Club afterward and didn't invite anyone else include: AJ Hofmann (211), Dennis Walling (216), Jon Little (221), and Scott Murdock (202)

After a hard fought season, the Tournament of Champions was won tonight by Mike Fitzgerald (Division 4), with Jon Little (Division 2) landing in second place. Mike will pocket the nice first-place pot, while Jon will take away the second-place pot. Congratulations!
