Hot-n-Ready® vs. Thots & Spares

On lanes 1 and 2, Hot-n-Ready® squared off against Thots & Spares in a matchup that felt tight from the opening frame all the way through the final shots of the night. Hi everybody, I'm Alotta Tenpin reporting live from the sidelines, where the tension was thicker than concession-stand cheese sauce. Hot-n-Ready® split the points with Thots & Spares, taking Games 2 and 3 while narrowly losing the total-pinfall battle. Nick Kinney helped steady the Ready® crew with a 198 in Game 2 after a rough opener, and the tall, broad-shouldered stallion looked noticeably more relaxed once he started carrying the corner pins. Buck Nasty also recovered from a miserable 116 start to hammer out a strong 187 in Game 3, helping his team secure the split despite missing Seth Gunderson and Ian Estey. "I finally realized I didn't need lucky ball cap that I forgot to wear," Nick Kinney joked afterward. "Once I fgured that out that, the pins stopped acting suspicious." Hot-n-Ready® remains in first place, and after bouncing back from an opening-game loss to take Games 2 and 3, the team looked relieved to escape with a split against one of the league's steadiest opponents.
Thots & Spares may have missed a chance at a 3-1 victory, but there was still plenty to feel good about after securing the total-pinfall point and splitting the matchup. AJ Hofmann paced the team with a 499 series and a clutch 185 in Game 3, while Tim Deddens quietly delivered one of the night's most consistent performances with games of 138, 149, and 147. Scott Murdock came out firing with games of 181 and 165, putting Thots in excellent position to take three points before a difficult 106 finish in Game 3 opened the door for Hot-n-Ready® to steal the finale. Scott still crossed the incredible milestone of 330,000 career pins and now sits at 330,320 for his career. Jim Koger added another dependable performance with a 382 series while wearing one of his trademark Mexico bar t-shirts. "I blame the Easy Inn tacos," Scott Murdock said afterward. "At some point during Game 3, one of them turned sideways in my stomach and completely changed my release angle." Even after missing the extra point, Thots remain firmly in third place and continue looking like one of the toughest outs in the league.
Squid Row vs. The Queenpins
Over on lanes 3 and 4, Squid Row delivered one of the most dominant performances of the season, sweeping every point from The Queenpins with powerhouse team games of 704, 708, and 700. Leading the underwater assault was Ben Spencer, who uncorked this week's high game of 211 on his way to a devastating 565 series. Ben, the towering red-bearded strike machine in the squid-covered button-down, looked completely locked in from the moment he arrived late. Matthew Taylor nearly matched him shot-for-shot with a silky 561 series, while Dennis Walling piled on another 523. Chris Windham kept things stable with his usual steady production, giving Squid Row four bowlers who constantly kept pressure on the Queenpins. "After that 211, I started feeling like the lane was legally required to respect me," Ben Spencer laughed afterward. The sweep keeps Squid Row firmly in second place, and with scores like these, the race for first suddenly looks a whole lot tighter.
For The Queenpins, the night was far more competitive than the final score suggested, even if the standings sheet will forever show a painful 0-4 sweep. Dustin Schmeltz led the team with a 505 series and opened with a strong 189, while Lindsay Sargent stole headlines by firing a personal-best 146 game and a new personal-best 381 series to claim both women's weekly honors. Lindsay, the tall platinum-blonde lefty with the smooth release, looked more confident with every frame as the night progressed. Ryan Sisco also reached the massive milestone of 40,000 career pins, now sitting at 40,338. Unfortunately for the Queenpins, every time they posted a respectable game, Squid Row answered with another tidal wave of strikes. "Honestly, I think the squid shirts gave them aerodynamic advantages," Dustin Schmeltz claimed afterward while shaking his head. The Queenpins remain in fourth place despite the sweep, but they'll need a rebound next week if they want to avoid slipping further down the standings.
Walk Offs vs. 3 Pins and a Gutter
Down on lanes 5 and 6, Walk Offs entered their matchup with 3 Pins and a Gutter hoping to ride the momentum of #1 Power Ranked and #1 Head-to-Head bowler Chris Hagan. Hagan absolutely delivered, rolling a 443 series that included a huge 161 in Game 3, well above his 125 average. The athletic blond right-hander looked sharp all night and nearly dragged the Walk Offs back into contention by himself. Brian Schaben and Carl Mueller stayed close to their averages, while Mike Fitzgerald struggled to find consistency. Unfortunately for the Walk Offs, 3 Pins and a Gutter simply had too many bowlers outperforming expectations at the same time. The sweep dropped Walk Offs from fifth to sixth place, leaving the team visibly frustrated after entering the night with momentum. "I knew it was going to be trouble when somebody dropped an entire mozzarella stick onto the approach during practice," Chris Hagan said afterward. "You can't recover strategically from that."
Meanwhile, 3 Pins and a Gutter rolled like a team that suddenly realized the standings were within reach. Most Valuable Bowler Nathan Burrows led the way with a fantastic 455 series and the team's high game of 172. Nathan, wearing the cosmic-kitten shirt and suspenders combo that somehow grows more powerful every week, looked completely in command from start to finish. JoAnne Barber captured women's high series honors with a smooth 393, while Jesse Sauerbrei exploded for a new personal-best 143 game in Game 2, finishing 44 pins over average for the biggest over-average game of the night. Jeremy Varnell chipped in a gritty 340 series while looking like he should either be bowling or defending a medieval fortress somewhere. "Once Jesse rolled that 143, we all started believing the bowling gods had finally paid attention to us," Nathan Burrows said afterward. The Gutters completed the sweep, climbed into fifth place, and suddenly have real momentum heading into the final stretch of the season.
Set Up for the Showdowns
And next week? Oh, friends, the schedule makers absolutely cooked. First-place Hot-n-Ready® will face second-place Squid Row in what could become the biggest showdown of the season so far. If the Squids can keep posting monster scores like this week, they could realistically overtake the Ready® crew for first place by the end of the night. Meanwhile, Hot-n-Ready® knows another balanced effort could create some desperately needed breathing room at the top of the standings. Right behind them, third-place Thots & Spares will battle fourth-place Queenpins in a matchup with major implications for the middle of the standings. A strong night from the Queenpins could pull them dangerously close to overtaking Thots, while another solid performance from AJ Hofmann and company might allow them to separate from the pack. Then there's the showdown between fifth-place 3 Pins and a Gutter and sixth-place Walk Offs, where the stakes suddenly feel enormous after this week's sweep flipped their positions. Another strong night from the Gutters could cement their rise, while the Walk Offs desperately need a rebound to stop the slide before the postseason picture tightens any further. In other words: next week has all the ingredients for an absolute bowling bloodbath.

In this week's Tournament of Champions InterDivisional brackets: Tim Deddens triumphed over his enemies in Group 1, while nobody claimed victory in Group 2 (though Scott Murdock came closest). JoAnne Barber spanked Group 3, and Nathan Burrows claimed victory in Group 4. Congratulations to our division champions! The following eight people will compete next week for the big prize! Division 1: Ian Estey and Matthew Taylor. Division 2: Scott Murdock and Jon Little. Division 3: Tim Deddens and Kurt Fredrickson. Division 4: Mike Fitzgerald and Jesse Sauerbrei.
NEXT WEEK:
- First, on lanes 1&2, 5th-place 3 Pins and a Gutter (hcp 2) will battle 6th-place Walk Offs. Gutterly Pinned is expected to roll a little low and lose the series but avoid getting swept; while Walkers are forecast to drop their average a bit even as they enjoy their victories.
- Moving to lanes 3&4, 1st-place Hot-n-Ready® will meet with 2nd-place Squid Row. The Ready® might maintain their current strength as they lose the series but avoid getting swept; while Squids ought to hold steady as they enjoy their victories.
- Finally, on lanes 5&6, 3rd-place Thots & Spares will socialize with 4th-place The Queenpins. Thots are predicted to have a bit of an off night and get swept; while Queenpins are anticipated to raise their average while they rack up a sweep.
*(Remember, the predicted results above are based on mathematical extrapolations and can be changed by all sorts of factors. If you don't like how your team's results are predicted, you and your teammates have the power to prove the math wrong!)
