The End of an Era

Posted by ScooterJ December 4, 2019 Fall 2019, Week 16 View Score Sheets

As our 20th year of bowling came to a close and we prepare to embark on our next 20 years, the bowling alley echoed the moment by ripping out the ball returns and scoring consoles we've been kicking/using since our formation and replaced them with spiffy new ones have no idea the abuse they will soon endure.

Despite the myriad of exceptions they annoying quizzed Scoot on last night, See you next Tuesday! remains the championship team so now gets to perform next week's awards presentation, which according to league rules must be done in the form of a musical every 40th season. Next week we meet at our usual time to name all the award winners and hand out prize money (in the meeting room on the Finnegan's side, through the back of the snack bar), followed by 9-pin-tap fun night.

The final week saw not even one full-time VML bowler show up to bowl, and only one team move up in the standings. Freda Schroeder picked up this week's high game (168) and series (445) for the women. As for the men, Dennis Walling snagged this week's high game with a 236, and high series was earned by Ian Goetz with a 624. Read on for all the rest of the details!

First up, on lanes 17 & 18: We find a pairing of virtually equal strengths, as already-locked-in champsSee you next Tuesday! matched wits with Pin Is King 2. Though reinforced by Aaron Barber with his 535 series, Next Tuesday accomplished only 1 win against Kings. In the meantime, Dennis Walling with his better-than-normal 582 series shone in Kings (with kudos to Most Valuable Bowler Ben Spencer) as his team took the match with 3 wins. See you next Tuesday! remains in 1st place, while Kings remains in 2nd.

Congratulations to Tournament of Champions winners, Michael Gordon (2nd) and Jared Nuhn (1st)! You' ll both see extra money next week.

On lanes 19 & 20: The intimidating C.I.C.K. Ass 2 should have made easy work of the forfeiting BDE. Blessed by Ian Goetz with his above-average 624 series, CICK collected 3 wins against BDE. With BDE forfeiting, all CICK needed to do was roll within 40 pins of their combined team average each game. But that's just not quite how things went. After losing game 1 by nearly 100 pins, the only team captain with a track record of making teammates not bowl when they are doing poorly sent himself packing, along with their lead-off-bowler. The Goetz's were left behind to clean up the mess, and after some stumbled recovered well enough to win games 2 & 3 and just narrowly pull off a total pins victory. C.I.C.K. Ass 2 finishes in 3rd place, while BDE settles for 4th.

On lanes 21 & 22: In a fairly closely-matched lineup Rear Admirals had a rendezvous with The James Tott Center for Kids Who Can't Bowl Good and Wanna Learn To Do Other Stuff Too. Headlined by Scott Murdock with his above-average 550 series, with props to #1 Head-to-Head and #1 Power-Ranked Jared Nuhn, Admirals missed a clean sweep over James Tott School for B's by just one pin. As this was happening, James Tott with his better-than-normal 507 series headmastered the School for B's as his team missed getting swept by just one pin. Rear Admirals end in 5th place, while James Tott School for B's ends up with 6th.

Finally, down on lanes 23 & 24: Bowl Movements forfeited, making for a quick night for the two attending members ofScared Splitless. All Splitless needed to do was roll within 40 pins of their combined team average each game, and CICK Ass 2 should have been paying attention to Splitless in the first game to see how it's done. :) Luke Melton with his 373 series motivated Splitless as they swept. Bowl Movements drop 1 spot in the standings to close out in 8th place, while Splitless moves up 1 spot to wind up in 7th.

Bowlers sneaking into The 200 Club include: Aaron Barber (213), Ben Spencer (207), Carl Goetz (212), Dennis Walling (236), Ian Goetz (215,216), James Tott (201), Matthew Taylor (235), and Michael Gordon (210)

After a hard fought season, the Tournament of Champions was won tonight by Jared Nuhn (Division 4), with Michael Gordon (Division 1) landing in second place. Jared will pocket the nice first-place pot, while Michael will take away the second-place pot. Congratulations!

The Bowling Thru Time winners will be announced next week at the awards ceremony, though you can pretty much tell who the winners are by looking at this week's recap.. (There are two ties among the individual bowlers -- 3rd & 4th place in divisions 2 and 4, that will need to be worked out by hand to break. Division 4 is the greatest mystery as there are 3 bowlers currently tied for just 2 prize positions.) All teams in the top half and all individuals in the top half of their division will get extra money next week.

Though tonight was the last night that counts, we still have one more week to go! Next week begins with a league meeting led by See you next Tuesday!, where awards winners will be announced and prize money handed out. Everybody gets cash! The meeting will be at 6:30 and, unless otherwise announced later, will be held in the Small Meeting Room in Finnnegan's Hall. (Go through the door in the back of the snack bar and turn right.) After that, 9-pin tap bowling just for fun! (Knocking down 9 pins on the first ball counts as a strike.)
